Brief instructions.
Glass engraving (i.e., applying a design by deforming the top thin layer) at home can be done in two ways: mechanical and chemical.
Mechanical method.
It consists of using an engraving attachment driven by an electric motor. The engraver can be a stand-alone product, or it can be an attachment, for example, for mini-drills with a flexible shaft. The last option is the most universal for use at home, because... The mini-drill has a lot of capabilities that open up a fairly wide range of applications for our talents =)
I recommend applying a design on glass with an engraver “wet”; this reduces the risk of glass dust getting into the eyes or respiratory tract, despite the protection (when working with an engraver, protection is required!!! More on this below).

2. Apply a sponge moistened with water to the part of the drawing that we are working on. It is important to apply it, wetting the surface, because if you smear it, you can erase the design. It is important not to overdo it with water, otherwise there will be splashes.
3. We put on protection and turn on the engraver. Use a nozzle to outline a small part of the lines. It will be more careful to work with small “strokes”, because drawing exactly many small lines is much easier than drawing one, but large one at once. Carefully read the instructions for your tool; it is not recommended to keep the mini-drill turned on for a long time! Pause and clean the nozzle periodically.
4. Quite often it is necessary to update the water film on the working surface. To do this, use a wrung-out sponge to remove the muddy water that contains glass dust, rinse the sponge and repeat step 2.
5. After the entire drawing has been completed, soak the product with a napkin and see if there are any gaps. If necessary, correct it; if not, use a clean damp sponge under running water to wash off the remaining marker and glass dust. We wipe the workplace and tools

I am often asked: "What is engraving? What does it look like?" In particular, I do hand engraving using a drill. There is also gravel engraving. Today we will talk about hand engraving made with a drill. Hand engraving is also called live engraving, because it is done by hand, which means a piece of the master’s soul is put into the product.

Most of you have tested the principle of this method on yourself in the dentist’s office. The top layer is scratched off. How it's done? Just! The way you write with a pen is how you engrave. Due to the ease of handling the tip, you can write or draw on almost any surface. Convex or concave, ribbed or waves, anywhere. The main thing is to get used to holding the product. Either fasten it or hold it with your hands. If it is a samovar, then you have to hold it on your lap. If we are making an inscription or drawing inside the ring, then we must hold the ring itself firmly with our fingers.
It’s difficult with large mirrors, paintings under glass, in general, anything that is large. You have to do it while standing and bending over. Once they asked: “Is it possible to engrave a motorcycle?” Yes, you can, if you bring the electrical outlet close to the motorcycle, or vice versa.
The effect, of course, is different on products made from different materials.
For example on glass The engraving color is white and does not depend on the color of the glass. The same applies to ceramics, porcelain, and stone. Since porcelain and ceramics, if without dyes, are white and the executed text or drawing is not visible, then after finishing the work you can cover the engraving itself with waterproof paint (silver, gold, or whatever you wish) - the effect is amazing. If you want to see a portrait on a metal surface, then it would be best if the layout was done in Corel Draw.
