Stadiums with a closing roof. The football field was moved to the roof of the kindergarten Installation “Cloud City”

In our country, it is customary to strictly close roofs to visitors and consider anyone who gets in there to be a hooligan. And all over the world they are used for the benefit of building residents and employees. And today we will talk about 10 most unusual examples of using roofs, collected from all over the planet.

Roof garden

The most popular way to use the roof is to set up a small garden on it, where people could go to relax, admiring the city panoramas spread around and the green vegetation planted right there.

Similar structures can be found all over the world, but the largest roof garden is located at the top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore, where a huge palm grove opens into a swimming pool at the very edge of a two-hundred-meter cliff.

Rooftop pools

Swimming pools are generally a very popular object for placement on the roofs of multi-storey buildings. People are not averse to swimming in them, while having a gorgeous view of the city streets and neighboring skyscrapers.

Moreover, such structures appear not only in the middle of densely built-up cities, where there is no other opportunity to equip a swimming pool, but also in the private sector, in houses whose owners do not disdain architectural experiments with their homes.

Venice canal on the roof of a shopping center in London

And in London there is another water feature that has nothing to do with the swimming pool. There is a network of canals along which you can move on small boats designed for two people.

This channel wraps around the roof of the building in central London that houses the Selfridges shopping centre. Its total length is 200 meters and its width is 2 m. The Crystal Cafe is also located here, a catering establishment where you can wait for your turn to go boating.

Private development on the roof of a shopping center

But in the Chinese city of Zhuzhou, on the roof of a local shopping center there are not canals for sightseeing boat rides, but private buildings. There are small garden plots there.

During the construction of the shopping center, these houses were declared as office buildings for the employees of the complex. But over time, they were sold into private hands, and wealthy citizens settled in the cottages, who want to live comfortably in the very center of Zhuzhou, with beautiful views from the windows.

Football field on the roof of a skyscraper

In Tokyo, on the contrary, they are trying to make the roofs of buildings in the city center not private, but public space, which is so lacking on the streets of the metropolis. For example, a football field appeared at the top of one of the buildings in the Japanese capital several years ago.

Thanks to an artificial lighting system, this rooftop sports facility operates 24 hours a day. In Tokyo, at any time of the day or night, there are many people who want to kick a ball - the love for football in Japan is enormous.

Rainbow on the roof

On the roof of one of the tallest buildings in the Danish city of Aarhus, for several years now there has been an unusual structure in the form of a rainbow circle, completely encircling the top point of this building. The installation was created by the famous Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, who is known throughout the world for his experiments with light, color and space.

In particular, in this case, he wanted to create a new spatial landmark for Aarhus, in which it is not the cardinal directions that are important, but the colors. So the residents of the city now live not in the northern or southern part, but in the red, purple or yellow, depending on the direction of the colors of the rainbow in this installation.

It would be strange if one of the world's largest venues for contemporary art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, did not try to use the roof of the building for its own needs. There is a large-scale installation with a name from the architect Tomas Saraceno.

Cloud City is a multi-story structure of complexly shaped volumes connected by metal joints and steel cables. You can walk inside this object, thus discovering the geometry of New York from a new side.

Roof Top Terrace – office on the roof

Open office spaces, where anyone can work without being tied to a specific company, are now available in hundreds, if not thousands of cities around the world. And only in London did such an institution appear inside a building, and outside on one of the roofs in the center of the British capital.

The Roof Top Terrace coworking space is open in London during the warmer months every day from 6:30 am to 8 pm. It doesn’t matter whether it rains (and it rains almost every day in the British capital) - there are free umbrellas for visitors on this open terrace.

Amusement park on the roof of a skyscraper

And we will end this review not with work, but with entertainment. After all, on the roof of the Stratosphere skyscraper in Las Vegas there is an amusement park for people who are not afraid of heights.

After all, visitors to this park will have to spin on the carousel and other attractions while hovering at an altitude of 250 meters above ground level - it is at this mark that the roof of the Stratosphere skyscraper is located.

In our country, it is customary to strictly close roofs to visitors, and anyone who gets in there is considered a hooligan. In extreme cases, an observation deck, a dovecote or a “plantation” of satellite dishes can be placed on the roof. Meanwhile, in the rest of the world, roofs are successfully used to benefit residents and employees of buildings, businessmen and tourists. We will tell you about twenty of the most unusual examples of the use of roofs, collected from all over the planet.

People are not averse to swimming in them, while having a gorgeous view of the city streets and neighboring skyscrapers. Moreover, such structures appear not only in the middle of densely built-up cities, where there is no other opportunity to equip a swimming pool, but also in the private sector, in houses whose owners are not afraid of architectural experiments with their homes.

Tennis court in the clouds

The world's highest tennis court, soaring more than 1,000 feet above the ocean, can be found at the luxurious five-star Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai. Between tennis matches, the court is used as a landing pad for helicopters. By the way, in addition to the tennis court, there are swimming pools and beautiful gardens on the roof of the tallest hotel in the world (321 m). A super-modern sail-shaped building was erected in the sea, 280 meters from the shore on an artificial island.

In central London, on the roof of the Selfridges shopping center, there is another body of water that has nothing to do with the swimming pool. Open air cinema

England never ceases to amaze: a rooftop cinema recently opened in London! Three friends decided to open their own video room for friends and family on the roof of their own house. Having collected the necessary documents from the government confirming the non-commercial component of the idea itself, the British built an excellent open-air cinema overlooking London. At first they were just watching their favorite movie with popcorn, and now on the roof instead of chairs there are inflatable pools for several people! A movie show, so to speak, without leaving the “jacuzzi”... By the way, there is a rooftop cinema “Rooftop Cinema”, which can accommodate up to 500 people, in Tallinn.

Church on the roof of a residential building

In the Kiev district of Obolon, on the roof of one of the high-rise buildings, to the surprise of local residents and the architectural supervision of Kyiv, a three-story Orthodox church grew up.

The city authorities are talking about the need to demolish this illegal structure, and the churchmen claim that it makes no difference where exactly the temple is located - on earth or in heaven. Moreover, in the second case he is even closer to God.

This is the case when parents consider their children to be fools who do not understand anything. You, “protecting the child’s psyche,” forced the older child to suffer, to look for his beloved cat, knowing that she had died. Most likely, he was not so stupid, he understood that “she felt better, but she ran away from the clinic,” most likely means that the mother was simply lying, but logic came into conflict with the still existing trust in the mother when you think that if mom says anything, then she’s right - and he understood what happened, but still continued to wait and hope: “What if she’s really alive, because mom can’t lie to me?” And then, when even the youngest told you that he still understood everything (and they probably discussed the case with each other, and increasingly came to disappointing conclusions that mom was lying), you also convinced him that he supposedly " not guilty." In my opinion, this is a direct way to raise children who are unable to take responsibility for their actions. I think it would be much more useful to say that yes, Kusya died because you pushed her, but nothing can be done, and now you know that your self-indulgence and experiments can lead to dire consequences, and, of course, you do so you will never do it again. The child would cry and forever remember what he did. And a person’s personality is made up of memories. And please don't promote mosquito nets as protection against cat loss. They are designed to protect your home from insects, and nothing more. At most, they can protect your parrot from flying out of the window. Recently it was in the news that a one-year-old child with such a net fell out of the 10th floor... died, of course. These nets will not protect either a cat or a child. They are made of plastic and glued with double-sided tape, or pinned with buttons. The slightest load and the mesh flies out. A cat can jump onto the net after a bird or a butterfly and fly down. Or he might just start tearing at it, sharpening his claws, and tear it apart. If you are getting a cat, then buy and install an anti-cat mesh; this is a metal lattice that is firmly attached to the frame with screws or bolts, and can even support an adult.

What could the roof of a semi-buried parking lot with an area of 35,000 km become? m, located in a large student town? Not necessarily a gray spot on a satellite map. Experience shows that a used roof can easily turn into a huge sports ground.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT Polytechnic) is one of the oldest universities in Canada, located in Calgary. The history of the educational institution goes back more than 100 years, and by the beginning of the 21st century it was in critical need of significant expansion, primarily in the issue of car parking. The design problems for the future parking lot consisted of visual “camouflage” of its actual size and the harmonious combination of the new building with the ancient architectural complex nearby. The Bing Thom Architects workshop proposed a solution: to place a football field for the SAIT Trojans student sports teams on the entire roof of the parking lot.

The roof used is full of advantages

The surface of the sports ground is covered with wear-resistant turf. Architects report that students now play there all year round - fortunately, Alberta's climate allows it. The walls of the three-level parking lot were left fully visible only on the eastern and southern sides, and on the side of historical buildings roof used coincides with ground level. This allowed the dominance of the Gothic main campus, a gem of local architecture, to be maintained.

But that's not all. The design was connected to the landscape by covering the walls with perforated screens with many thousands of holes, which form a characteristic sky pattern on the surface. Metal panels with perforations are the original design of the Bing Thom studio and one of the Vancouver artists. Such a façade improves natural light in the parking lot, facilitating its ventilation.

Now green roofs in the form of gardens, sports fields, parks with walking paths, places for children to play and even dog walking are at the peak of popularity in dozens of countries. In Russia, used roofs are professionally installed only by the roofing and landscape company TsinCo RUS, a market expert who gives a 10-year guarantee for the entire project. Details and special offers are on the company website.
