Young needles are bright, golden yellow. The brightest color is obtained in sunny places, in the shade it becomes greener. The variety is demanding on growing conditions, requires wet and fertile soil. Great for growing in containers, creating hedges. Recommended planting frequency in a row: 0.5-0.6 meters.

Needles: The needles are bright golden yellow, bright yellow when blooming, bronze in winter.
Growth features: Growth is slow. Annual growth is 5 cm high and 5 cm wide. The height of an adult plant is up to 3-4m.
The soil: It is undemanding to soils, but prefers fertile loams.
Light: Shade-tolerant.
Moisture: Can tolerate dry soil and excessive moisture.
Frost resistance: Frost-resistant. USDA zone 2b (see )
Landing: To obtain a denser crown, planting in places with light partial shade and sufficient soil moisture is recommended.
Decorative qualities: Bright needles, crown shape.
Purpose: For single landings, decorative groups, borders, rock gardens. Recommended for colorful mixed compositions, tapestries.

Planting and caring for western thuja Sunkist

For planting thuja choose sunny places. Although the plant tolerates shade, however, the plant develops worse and the crown becomes less attractive. The soil is suitable for light (peaty, dry and clay sandy loam). When planting in heavier soil, a drainage layer of at least 15 cm thick is required at the bottom of the landing pit. A planting hole is dug to the size of a plant coma, with a depth of 60 to 80 cm. The soil mixture can be prepared in advance. A mixture consisting of sand, peat and leaf (turf) soil in a ratio of 1: 1: 2 is optimal. The acidity level for thuja is desirable in the range of 4.5-6 pH (see). For better growth add nitroammophoska (for an adult plant up to 100 g). It must be remembered that the root neck should be at ground level.

After planting, thuja should be watered regularly, about 1 time per week with one bucket of water per adult plant. If planting was carried out during a hot dry period, then the frequency of watering should be increased. Thuja is a plant that evaporates a lot of moisture, so it loves watering and sprinkling, and responds well to it.

Top dressing is usually carried out in the spring, any complex fertilizers (Kemira-Universal, etc.), 50-60 g per m 2, are suitable for this.

At the onset of the growing season, the soil is loosened to a shallow depth (10 cm), so the thuja has a superficial root system, and mulched (with compost, peat, bark, etc.)

An adult plant tolerates winter frosts well. However, arborvitae suffer from sunburn in the spring. Therefore, they must be covered, especially young plants (see). For the winter, the crown is tightly pulled together with tape to avoid damage to the crown from wet snow. In the spring, damaged dry shoots are removed, sanitary pruning is carried out (see).

Mulching and regular weeding/cultivation is desirable. In the first year after planting, most plants love sprinkling the crown in the evenings with water at 17-30C. It is desirable to buy seedlings in a plastic container with prolonged (long-lasting) fertilizers (the plant is not dug up with inevitable damage to the root system), after planting they are guaranteed to take root. The most important thing in planting the western arborvitae is the careful preparation of the substrate for planting, the invariable component of which is sour riding (red, white, young) peat, preferably sphagnum peat with a pH not exceeding 4.5. An exception is the individual characteristics of soil acidity in the Ukrainian swampy Polissya (Zhytomyr, Lutsk, Rivne), where there are areas with an acidic environment. In the rest of Ukraine, acidic natural soil is a rarity. Therefore, alkaline soils must be acidified without fail. This can be done by mulching around the trunk circle of the plant with crushed bark of Scots pine and coniferous spruce branches collected in any nearby forest and organic matter with an acidic reaction. Ukrainian gardeners traditionally use garden sulfur, citric acid, phosphoric acid, battery fluid (electrolyte) to acidify the soil. In the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine, our customers use diluted liquid from miners' tagankas.

Mineral fertilizers: In autumn and winter, plants can turn brown (a mixture of orange and brown) in neglected plants, this phenomenon is more pronounced. Fertilizer - NPK in spring - more nitrogen, in summer you can use a standard set 20.20.20 (such as inexpensive nitroammophoska) or formula 11.18.18. In autumn, it is desirable to give a complex with increased potassium (autumn fertilizer) from spring to autumn, do not forget about trace elements and foliar treatments. On sandy Kyiv soils (Polesie) and the north of the Kyiv region, we recommend using organic California worm humus, manure or compost that has rotted for AT LEAST 2-3 years. Organics changes the structure of light soils and "launches" the natural perpetual motion machine soil bacteria. Thuja gratefully responds to the application of mineral and organic fertilizers. On the territory of poor sandy soils (Ukrainian Polissya, including most of the Kyiv region), we recommend adding compost (obtained from garden, garden, kitchen waste) or old organic humus from composted manure. Organics will significantly improve the structure of "light" soils and "start" the perpetual natural engine of soil bacteria. As a result, worms from neighbors themselves migrate to you and launch chain reaction perpetual organic engine. Having learned to "serve" it, we will forget about expensive imported mineral fertilizers forever. The time has come to get rid of the wild pernicious Soviet habits of destroying (conquering) nature for the benefit of man. It is more expedient to sort waste, as in Europe, taking care of future generations.

Watering: Regular watering, do not allow the soil to dry out.

Pruning: Without a haircut, a beautiful thuja grows with a bright color with the shape of a road cone. Due to the fact that 90% of Sunkist thuja in Ukraine is initially used to create hedges (they are planted with the correct distance for hedges - 60-70cm). But after 3-4 years, the phenomenon of the charm of needles struck most of the responsible and expensive hedges. The reason is the wrong haircut. Answer: if we want to get an elegant hedge and see in it that western Sunkist, then the expected / designed wall thickness should decrease, from natural (for Sunkist) 100cm, to 50-60cm. We achieve this with a regular vertical haircut. With periodicity IVb-VII (end of March and beginning of July). The secret is that all sides of the plant must be cut vertically. In other words, a pyramidal plant forms into a columnar plant. At the same time, the green mass in the lower part decreases, the needles cease to touch, stick together and rot / rot. Increasing the amount of light per unit volume of the crown reduces the part of the plant in which photosynthesis is weakened. The smaller the age of the plant that began to form, the easier it is to achieve a result. The result is a thin wall that strikes the imagination of neighbors and guests. After pruning, it is necessary to feed the thuja, treat it with a fungicide. This will ensure uniform growth of new shoots, protect against fungal diseases.

Care: Caring for thuja Sunkist is simple - annual mulching of tree trunks. It is necessary to avoid sodding the soil with a lawn.

Diseases and pests: Tracheomycosis wilt (fusarium), rust, drying of branches, alternariosis, brown schütte (brown snow mold of conifers), nectriosis of the bark of branches. Treatment and prevention - treatment with fungicides (Skor, Switch, Maxim, Ordan, Horus, Quadris, Radomil Gold, etc.) or old-fashioned - double treatment with copper-containing preparations. Of course, it is better that the “diagnosis” is made by a specialist. But it's not cheap. As a rule, with the help of the Internet, a modern gardener can independently identify the enemy and choose the right methods and means of plant protection. Untreated plants can be affected by spider mites, mining moths, aphids, and scale insects. Prevention and treatment - spraying with insecticides (Aktara, Enzhio, Actellik, Match) is carried out in spring and again in summer. It is better to carry out preventive treatments once a month than to treat when the pest multiplies and “eats up” the plant. An example is the war of gardeners and Ukrainians with Colorado beetles, which, like their human "cotton" namesakes - the Kremlin occupiers of the "Colorado", are very dangerous and gluttonous and climb into other people's gardens. Soil pests: To date, the cockchafer (May beetle), scoop are the most dangerous soil pests. Having seen the first flying beetle (mid-April), we URGENTLY process the crown with Actara or any of the numerous preparations based on imidacloprid, for example, Prestige (Bayer), Antikhrushch. In this case, part of the solution should fall on the root neck of the trunk (10 cm above the ground). Similar treatments are repeated every 40-50 days.
