Chapter 1

Visitors to the city of S. found this city boring and monotonous. But the permanent residents claimed the opposite: in the provincial town there are many entertainments, such as a local theater, a library, gambling clubs and extraordinary personalities, in whose company it was fun and pleasant.

Such people in the city of S. consider the Turkin family. The head of the family, Ivan Petrovich, is a handsome, handsome man and a great joker. Vera Iosifovna is his wife. Pleasant in all respects, a woman writes amateur novels and proudly rereads them to her guests. Ekaterina Ivanovna, the daughter of the Turkins, also has a talent - she plays the piano superbly.

A noble family in the city loved the guests and received them good-naturedly. Once the main character Dmitry Ionych Startsev was invited to the Turkins' house.

Once in the city, Dmitry Ionych remembers the invitation and goes on a visit to a famous family. The new guest was warmly welcomed and invited to tea.

Since Turkin's wife read her novels and stories to each of the visitors of the house, this fate did not bypass the doctor. All the plots of her works were invented and did not correlate with reality in any way. After each such reading, Ivan Petrovich praised his wife and said: "Not bad."

On his first visit to an intelligent family, the doctor met the daughter of the Turkins, Ekaterina Ivanovna. The family preferred to call her Kotik. Startsev immediately liked the girl. She played the piano, and Dmitry Ionych looked at the young beauty as if spellbound.

Satisfied and happy, the doctor returned on foot to his place in Dyalizh. He liked this pleasant family and especially their daughter. He walked almost 10 km and did not feel any fatigue.

Chapter 2

The doctor really wanted to visit the Turkins again, but there was a lot of work. A year later, Dmitry Ionych receives a letter from Vera Iosifovna, who asks Startsev to come to them. The eldest of the Turkins began to be haunted by severe headaches, and since no one from the local doctors could help her, she remembered the zemstvo doctor and decided to turn to him for help.

This visit was decisive for the immediate future in the life of the protagonist. He begins to visit the patient regularly and falls in love with her daughter, Ekaterina Ivanovna.

The cat passes the note and makes an appointment for the enamored doctor at the cemetery. Startsev got a little angry because of the chosen place for the meeting. He begins to convince himself that it is not the business of such a solid and respectful man to drag around the cemeteries at night. After an internal conversation with himself, he still goes to the appointed place.

By this time, the doctor had already got hold of a pair of horses and his coachman, whose name was Panteleimon. They reached the outskirts of the city of S., and then Startsev went on foot.

In vain Dmitry Ionych hoped for something: his beloved never came. He had no choice but to walk around the cemetery a little, giving himself to philosophical thoughts about the transience of life ...

Chapter 3

The next day, the doctor goes to the Turkins with a firm decision to propose to Kotik. Thoughts were in his head: about the past night, about the rich dowry that would be given for a young bride, about love. And right there, Startsev thought that the spoiled secular person was not a match for him, but immediately drove this thought away from himself. He offered to accompany Kotik to the club. They both got into the carriage, where Startsev proposed. Ekaterina Ivanovna reacted dryly to the doctor's love feelings and refused - the girl was going to become an artist and leave this city.

Startsev did not expect such a “stupid” end of the story. He felt insulted and sorry for himself. For three days Dmitry Ionych suffered, and then he calmed down and healed as before.

And Kotik went to Moscow to enter the conservatory.

Sometimes recalling past feelings, Startsev was glad that he had not married a girl.

Chapter 4

Four years flew by unnoticed. The Zemstvo doctor received patients not only in the village, but also in the city. Behind him was already great experience work, he got hold of a trio of horses.

Dmitri Ionych has been considerably replenished, and with him his coachman. The doctor began to be disturbed by shortness of breath and he no longer liked to walk.

The doctor had to communicate with many people, but he did not get to know anyone closely. He was annoyed by the local inhabitants, as he was not interested in them. Only an intellectual tries to talk to someone on a serious topic, and the layman immediately "gets into a dead end or starts such a philosophy, stupid and evil, that all that remains is to wave his hand and move away."

Since he could not find common topics for conversation with the locals, Dmitry Ionych began to get angry and more and more withdraw into himself. For his taciturnity and stern appearance, he was nicknamed in the vicinity "the puffed-up Pole."

The only thing that did not cease to interest the doctor was money and playing vint in the evenings.

A letter from Vera Iosifovna broke into the measured life of the doctor. Turkina, together with her daughter, asked the doctor to visit them.

Seeing Ekaterina Ivanovna, the former lover noted changes in the girl. She noticeably lost weight and lost her childish innocence in features. The old feelings didn't wake up in him. He only thought to himself: how good it is that he did not marry her.

The girl admitted that she was constantly thinking about Dmitry Ionych, and asked to tell him about her life. He reluctantly continues the conversation, he wants to leave. The dear family, which he used to like so much, irritates him.

A few days later, the lackey Pava comes to the doctor to deliver a letter from Kotik, who is anxiously waiting for a meeting with Startsev. But Dmitry Ionych did not visit the good-natured family: not in a few days, not in a year.

Chapter 5

A few years later, Startsev became even fatter and already walks with difficulty. His Coachman Panteleimon grew up with him. Ionych, as he is now called in the city, got hold of two estates and is looking after himself a third. He does not have enough time to engage in medical practice, but he does not leave the Zemstvo place because of greed. Ionych became very irritable, nervous, and often yells at patients, tapping his stick on the floor.

The doctor has become a simple layman who is not interested in anything but money. His feelings for Ekaterina Ivanovna were the only and last moment of joy in his life.

The Turkin family lives on as before. Ivan Petrovich hasn't changed at all and is still constantly witty. His wife still reads her mediocre novels to the guests. Their daughter, Ekaterina Ivanovna, has noticeably aged and complains about her health. Every year, with the advent of autumn, Kotik and his mother go to the Crimea to improve their health.

Conclusion

In the story of A.P. Chekhov raises the problem of the gradual degradation of man. A young, talented doctor eventually descends and turns into a layman. All his thoughts about high feelings disappear, and now he is only interested in greed. Money becomes the only joy in the life of the protagonist.

II . The message of the topic of the lesson and the appeal to the epigraph of the lesson.

III . teacher's word . The story "Ionych" was written in 1898 and is associated with the problems of the development of capitalism and capitalist relations in Russia, when material interest becomes the main priority. A person as a person, the self-worth of a person become unnecessary and fade into the background. The problems of poverty and humiliating poverty are combined with the need to strive to accumulate money, which often gives rise to dependence on them and, as a result, leads to lack of spirituality, spiritual degradation and devastation. The story also raises questions of interaction between a person and his social environment. Chekhov shows the degradation of the soul of Ionych through subtext, through artistic details and intonations.

The story has 5 parts. These are the stages life path Dmitry Ionych Startsev, stairs leading down.

1 V . Working with words from the story:

Zemstvo - a body of local rural self-government with a predominance of the nobility in it.

Passage - a fragment of a piece of music, usually of a virtuoso (technically perfect) nature.

Rip (obsolete) - rendered fat of marine animals and some fish. Lafitte - red grape variety.

degrade - gradually deteriorating, come to degeneration.

V . Work with text.

Analysis of the first chapter.

Read the beginning of the text (1 paragraph)

What do we learn about the main character from the beginning of the story? ("just appointed a zemstvo doctor and settled in Dyalizh" "... to him, as an intelligent person" ..)

Pay attention to the last sentence of paragraph 3 (“... he didn’t have his own horses yet”)

Teacher:

It is very important to learn to "feel" the author, to see his point of view on the events described. In order for the reader to feel deeply the personality of Startsev, Chekhov reveals to us not only his inner world, but also, as it were, the very birth of the hero’s thought: “Vera Iosifovna read about how a young, beautiful countess arranged schools, hospitals, libraries in her village and how she fell in love with the wandering artist, - she read about what never happens in life, and yet it was pleasant, comfortable to listen to, and all such good, calm thoughts went into her head - she didn’t want to get up.

What assessment do the author and hero give to the content of Vera Iosifovna's novel? What important detail is highlighted? (the author - “the described does not happen in life”, the hero does not believe what Vera Iosifovna reads).

How is Ekaterina Ivanovna playing the piano presented in the story? (“rocks are falling”, “the game is noisy, annoying, but still cultural sounds”)

Summary of the first chapter:

Startsev is pleased with the evening he spent with the Turkins.

V 1. Analysis of the second chapter.

Teacher: More than a year passes between the events of chapters 1 and 2.

What has changed this year? (Nothing)

How did the author and his hero see Ekaterina Ivanovna? (the hero - “she delighted him with her freshness”, the author - “And what a funny name Pisemsky was: Alexei Feofilaktych”)

Teacher: With this detail, the author shows the frivolity of the heroine (No wonder he calls her Kotik.), The inability to see the main thing both in literature and in life.

It is love that gives Startsev another chance to remain human. At the cemetery, his soul responded to the beauty of nature. It seemed that he should ponder over the eternal problems of life and death.

VII .Analysis of the third chapter.

Chapter 3 tells about the unsuccessful visit of Startsev with an official proposal. (“Startsev’s heart stopped beating restlessly.”)

VIII. Analysis of the fourth chapter.

    Read the first paragraph.

What changes have occurred in the Turkin family? (none)

Has Dmitry Ionych's attitude towards them changed? (Yes. “I should have stopped by, but he never did.”)

So, the last path to love is cut off, nothing delays the degradation, the loss of the human personality.

5 head - the result of the whole life of Startsev, the Turkins, the cityFROM. (Read the first paragraph.) At the end, Startsev is already his own, the same as all the inhabitants.

Conclusion (write in notebook): A careful reading of the text convinces us of the fact that Chekhov's artistic thought moves in the story from the particular to the general: the fate of Startsev, who turned into Ionych, is a manifestation of general disorder. The writer shows that solving personal problems is impossible without solving social problems. The author masterfully depicts the moral fall of man. And it beganeverything seemed would, with minor flaws in character hero: aspiration to the benefit of love , lack of sensitivity to people , irritability, inconsistency in their beliefs, inability to defend them, laziness and unwillingness to fight vulgarity.

The soulless life, to which Startsev deliberately doomed himself, excluded him from the ranks of living people, deprived him of the ability to think and feel. The conclusion follows from the story: if the ability to resist gradually goes out in a person, necrosis occurs. human soul- the most terrible retribution that life pays for opportunism. Protecting yourself from active life turns into a catastrophe for Startsev: he retreated before reality, he grows into evil with his whole being, comes to those from whom he leaves at the beginning and whom he hates. At the end of the story, Startsev and the Turkins are frankly placed side by side, equalized among themselves as people,at whose life failed equally: senseless and immoral are the idle undertakings of the Turkins, immoral and disgustingly soulless acquisitiveness of Ionych.

Startsev's degradation in the story "Ionych"

“I read about what never happens in life , and yet it was nice to hear , comfortable..."

"... listen to these noisy , annoying , but still cultural sounds - it was so nice ... "

« - Wonderful! Startsev said. , succumbing to the general passion.

"Not bad" - he remembered, falling asleep , and laughed.

«... . could complain about her life , of people..."

« ... what say comrades , when know?"

“And they must give a lot of dowry,” thought Startsev, listening absently.

“They will give a dowry, we will set up the situation ...”

    “Startsev’s heart stopped beating restlessly”

ten."... he calmed down and healed as before.

11. "... lazily stretched and said:

- How much trouble, however!

"...felt irritation, worried, but silent ... "

"...one more entertainment... - in the evenings to take out of the pockets pieces of paper obtained by practice..."

"...something was already preventing him from feeling the way he used to."

“... Talentless ... not the one who cannot write stories, but the one who who writes them and does not know how to hide it.

"A day of profit, a in the evening a club, a society of gamblers , alcoholics , khripunov ...»

"... the light in my soul went out."

"... greed has overcome, I want to keep up here and there."

    "... nothing interests him."

Homework:

1 .Swipe comparative analysis two episodes: the first and last meeting of Ekaterina Ivanovna and Startsev. Based on the analysis, prove that the development of Ekaterina Ivanovna was ascending, and Startsev's was descending.

2. Read Shukshin's story "Wider step, maestro!"

Read the given fragment of the text and complete tasks A1 - A5; B1-B4; C1.

A few more years passed. Startsev has become even more stout, fat, he breathes heavily and already walks with his head thrown back. When he, chubby, red, rides on a troika with bells, and Panteleimon, also chubby and red, with a fleshy nape, sits on the box, stretching forward straight, exactly wooden hands, and shouts to the oncoming ones: “Hold on!”, then the picture is impressive, and it seems that it is not a man who is riding, but a pagan god. He has a huge practice in the city, there is no time to breathe, and he already has an estate and two houses in the city, and he chooses for himself a third, more profitable one, and when they tell him in the Mutual Credit Society about some house nominated for auction, then he goes into this house without ceremony and, passing through all the rooms, ignoring the undressed women and children who look at him with amazement and fear, pokes at all the doors with a stick and says:

Is this an office? Is this a bedroom? And then what?

And while breathing heavily and wiping sweat from his forehead.

He has a lot of trouble, but still he does not give up his Zemstvo position; greed has overcome, I want to be in time here and there. In Dyalizh and in the city, his name is already simply Ionych. "Where is Ionych going?" or: “Should I invite Ionych to the consultation?”

Probably because his throat was swollen with fat, his voice changed, became thin and sharp. His character also changed: he became heavy, irritable. When he sees the sick, he usually gets angry, impatiently taps his stick on the floor, and shouts in his unpleasant voice:

Feel free to answer only questions! Don't talk!

He is alone. He is bored, nothing interests him.

For all the time while he lives in Dyalizh, love for Kotik was his only joy and, probably, his last. In the evenings he plays vint at the club and then sits alone at a large table and has supper. He is served by the footman Ivan, the oldest and most respected, they serve him lafitte No. 17, and already everyone - the foremen of the club, and the cook, and the footman - know what he likes and what he does not like, they try their best to please him, otherwise, what good, suddenly get angry and begin to knock with a stick on the floor.

While having dinner, he occasionally turns around and intervenes in some conversation:

What are you talking about? BUT? Whom?

And when, it happens, in the neighborhood at some table the Turkins are mentioned, he asks:

What kind of Turkins are you talking about? Is it about those that the daughter plays the piano?

That's all that can be said about him.

And the Turks? Ivan Petrovich hasn't aged, hasn't changed in the slightest, and as before, he jokes and tells jokes; Vera Iosifovna reads her novels to the guests willingly, as before, with sincere simplicity. And Kotik plays the piano every day, for four hours. She has visibly aged, is getting sick, and every autumn leaves with her mother for the Crimea. Seeing them off at the station, Ivan Petrovich, when the train starts moving, wipes away his tears and shouts:

Farewell please!

And waving a handkerchief. (A.P. Chekhov "Ionych")
