What is polyurethane: description, characteristics, application and properties. Polyurethane: characteristics, applications and prices Polyurethane what material

People who are interested in modern construction or manufacturing often come across a material such as polyurethane. What it is and how it is used, you can learn in detail in this article. This substance is a very elastic polymer, which is widely used in various areas of our life: construction, medicine, heavy, shoe or clothing industries. Naturally, this substance is synthetic. It has a lot of advantages, which you will now learn about.

Material advantages

The presented material has quite a lot of advantages:

· Resistance to wear, aging and external influences.

· High durability.

· It is possible to change the level of elasticity of the material.

· Possibility of use of substance at high loading.

· A wide range of temperatures in which polyurethane (what it is you already know) can be operated.

It is used in many spheres of human life.

· Sealants, clothing, insulation, shoes, pipes and other products that are used in everyday life are produced from it.

· Durability.

· Affordable cost. This material, no matter what characteristics it has, is inexpensive, so it can be purchased by anyone with an average and even

· Practicality and versatility.

No deformation.

· Does not leave marks on the surface with which they interact.

Properties and technical characteristics of the material

The most common material today is polyurethane. What it is, what advantages it has, you already know. Now let's look at the technical characteristics of this substance.

So, the presented material can work quietly in an aggressive environment, while its qualitative properties practically do not change. In addition, the substance is perfectly exploited in a fairly wide temperature range: from -60 to +80 degrees. Sometimes it can be heated up to 120 o, but this process should not last long, otherwise the material will simply collapse.

The polymer is able to withstand heavy loads, is less subject to aging than other substances. It is resistant to wear, moisture, temperature extremes, sunlight, salt, organic solvents. Polyurethane (what it is, you already know) is considered a very durable material. At the same time, its elasticity can be programmed during the production process. This material may have different characteristics, on which the scope of its application depends. It should be noted that the polyurethane may consist of one or more components.

Features of the manufacture of the presented material

It should be noted that the production of polyurethane cannot be called simple. It takes a lot of effort, work and energy. The process itself occurs by mixing and several elements: polyol and isocyanate. In addition, polyesteramines are also added to this mixture. The whole process is carried out on fairly expensive equipment.

It should be noted that the feedstock is produced in a few countries: Russia, Germany, the USA and Italy. The presented material is manufactured and processed in several ways: casting, pressing, extrusion.

What products are made from the presented material?

Polyurethane is a very common material. A lot of products are made from it. For example, in medicine, it is used to produce condoms, which are durable, smooth, low cost, and environmentally friendly. Tires for automobile wheels are also made from the presented substance. They not only last much longer than rubber ones, but also do not leave marks.

You should also remember such polyurethane products as o-rings, bushings, cuffs. This substance is used as a heater. The presented material is also used in the furniture industry for the manufacture of mattresses. If you buy polyurethane rollers, then you can be sure that they will last a long time.

A variety of suction cups, guides, bandages, linings, pulleys, pipe rails and other items are also produced from this material.

Where is liquid polyurethane used?

It must be said that this material can be used in different form: liquid, foam and solid. The first type of substance is most often used for waterproofing flat roofs. The advantage of this material is resistance to wear, moisture and other external influences. In addition, liquid polyurethane can be applied to difficult areas of the roof, where it would be difficult to use another insulator.

It should be noted that the presented material can close up holes and cracks in the old roof. The advantages of such waterproofing are:

Good adhesion;

Fast drying;

Strength;

Availability;

Ease of use;

Resistance to the negative influence of the external environment;

Ecological purity.

Decorative products from the presented material: advantages and features of use

It must be said that the presented material is used for the production of interior decoration elements. For example, decorative polyurethane is used for the production of cornices, ceiling moldings or other products. Very popular is stucco molding from the presented substance. It is distinguished by its strength, resistance to mechanical stress, the ability to create non-standard shapes. It should be noted that you can make decorative elements to order.

The advantages of such products are:

Strength;

Decorative attraction;

Ease of installation;

Ease of maintenance and operation;

Low cost;

Various shades.

I must say that, unlike gypsum decorative elements, polyurethane products do not turn yellow over time. In addition to cornices, you can order the manufacture of columns, pilasters, beams for stairs.

Features and uses of polyurethane foam

The most popular material in construction and repair is polyurethane foam. It has a low weight, good heat and sound insulation qualities, as well as low cost. It is resistant to steam, moisture, sunlight and temperature changes.

Using such a substance is quite simple. You just need to apply it to the desired area. However, one must also take into account the fact that the material is able to increase in size. The advantage of the substance is good adhesion, the possibility of staining.

In principle, these are all the features of the use of the presented material. Good luck!

How to restore the DWR treatment on insulated clothing or equipment DWR is a special polymer applied to the surface of the fabric to make it water-repellent. DWR processing is not forever. During the operation of the product, as well as after a certain number of washes, the effectiveness of DWR decreases. If water droplets have stopped rolling off the surface of the fabric and wet the fabric even after washing, it's time to restore the splash-proof treatment. We recommend the use of specific fabric re-spray formulations, either sprayed or poured into the washing machine, such as Grangers Clothing Repel or Performance Repel, or Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In or Spray-On. First wash the product according to the washing instructions, then use the selected composition to restore the splash-proof treatment by spraying it directly on the front of the product while it is still damp, or by running a second wash cycle, pre-filling required amount wash-in composition into the washing machine. The manufacturer's instructions for the restoration of the splashproof treatment on the packaging must be followed exactly. Many DWR recovery products require heat activation, so it is best to tumble dry treated clothing and equipment or drying cabinet at medium temperature (40-60°C) for 40-50 minutes or until completely dry.

The amount of insulation is less than in the original, the jacket is more demi-season for its intended purpose. Reinforcement of the elbows with overlays from the second layer of fabric. False epaulettes included High wide collar lined with fleece. It fastens with Velcro. The hood is insulated with a layer of fleece and stows away in the collar. Stretches around the face, and in two dimensions at the back of the head. Fastens at the front with Velcro Waist is tightened with an elastic cord with two clamps on the inside of the jacket. Slanted entry at a comfortable angle, fleece-lined inner document pocket with velcro flap (heart side), made of waterproof fabric washing clothes and equipment in a special mesh laundry bag to protect against possible damage by parts of the washing machine drum. Close all zippers and velcro fasteners and fully loosen all adjustments before washing. If the upper fabric is membrane, then it is better to wash the product with the lining out (turned inside out). Wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C with a double rinse cycle (it is better to use two rinse cycles to ensure that all detergent residues are removed from the fabric and insulation) and spin at medium speed. It is acceptable to use a tumble dryer at medium temperature (40-60°C) for 30-40 minutes or until completely dry, if the top fabric is membrane, it is better to dry the product with the lining out (turned inside out). You can dry the product in a suspended state with the lining out. For stubborn stains, before washing, treat stains with a special product such as Grangers Performance Wash or Nikwax Tech Wash, allowing the detergent to soak in for 10-15 minutes. It is better to store clothes and equipment with synthetic insulation in a straightened (not compressed) state. First wash the product according to the washing instructions, then use the selected composition to restore the splash protection by spraying it directly on the front of the product while it is still damp, or running a second wash cycle, first pouring the required amount of wash-in into the washing machine . The manufacturer's instructions for the restoration of the splashproof treatment on the packaging must be followed exactly. Many DWR reconditioning products require heat activation, so it is best to dry treated clothing and equipment in a tumble dryer or dryer at medium temperature (40-60°C) for 40-50 minutes or until completely dry.

The development of modern science does not stand still. Together with it, as already known materials are improved, so new ones appear. As a rule, synthetic polymers, such as polyurethane material, are taken as the basis. What kind of substances they are and what application they have found in all spheres of life and production, we will find out a little later. Physical and technological characteristics make it possible to use them even in the most critical industries: mechanical engineering, the manufacture of insulators and fasteners. It's simply impossible to imagine without them. everyday life person.

For a step forward

Despite constant development, the urgent need for new quality materials remains very high. Modern life requires a huge variety of different substances: plastic and solid, stretchable and durable. They must withstand stress, temperature extremes, aggressive operation.

This need is forcing scientists to experiment with the synthesis of polymeric compounds, with the compatibility of inorganic and organic components in an attempt to obtain more versatile compounds. Polyurethane is such a polymer. It has a whole set of unique properties that have made it one of the most actively used in almost all spheres of life and production.

What is this material: polyurethane?

First, it is worth understanding in more detail the substance itself and why it is called thermoplastic.

This polymer compound combines the hardness of durable plastic with the ductility of natural rubber. It appeared only in the middle of the last century, thanks to the efforts of scientists from the United States who were able to synthesize it. The physical characteristics of this material are directly dependent on the main component.

Basic raw material

There are several types of raw materials from which polyurethane material is produced for the sole. These are simple and complex polyesters, as well as aliphatic isocyanate.

Now that we know what kind of material it is - polyurethane, we need to figure out its possible compositions.

If a polyether (propylene and ethylene oxide, isoprene) has a larger percentage in the basis of a substance, then the final substance becomes more resistant to the hydrolysis process, and also receives increased frost-resistant and wear-resistant characteristics.

Polyester bases (linear products of phthalic acid) give the final substance the following features:

  • increase in tensile strength;
  • increased wear resistance;
  • the ability to restore the original shape.

For wheels, the polyurethane material based on the latter component receives increased UV resistance and ductility, even at sub-zero temperatures.

The main method for obtaining this substance is casting from granulate. The final elastomer can be in two states: viscous liquid and solid. Solids can be both crystalline and amorphous (i.e., have only a short-range order of atomic structure).

Glycols, water, glycerol ether or castor oil are used to lengthen and structure the chains. These reagents set the molecular weight for linear polyurethanes.

The catalyst for the formation of polyurethane can be tertiary amines, compounds of beryllium, iron, vanadium or copper, as well as lead or tin naphthenates.

The main feature of the substance

Finished products made from polyurethane material (insoles, for example) have different final properties, which may vary for each application. Key Features- the ability to set and adjust the necessary parameters at the initial stage of obtaining the material. This contributes to the ever-increasing expansion of the scope of its use.

If you do not pay attention to the predominant component that underlies thermoplastic polyurethane, then the resulting material also has a whole set of common properties.

Key Features

Firstly, this substance has stamina and endurance and keeps its shape well. Secondly, its high strength under various deformations, such as stretching or bending, allows it to become indispensable in industries where the plasticity of the material comes to the fore. Thirdly, a good level of noise and vibration absorption makes polyurethane popular, for example, in mechanical engineering.

In addition, the substance can be subjected to coloring, which does not affect the wear resistance parameters, since the paint is applied not only to the top layer, but paints over the entire volume.

The temperature range of application of this elastomer ranges from -60 to +80 degrees Celsius.

Polyurethane, as a shoe sole material, is resistant to fats, microbes, bacteria, temperature extremes, sea water, aging, mechanical stress. To increase the overall strength of the material, it can be coated with a layer of reinforced fiberglass. Solutions of polyurethane in organic solvents are converted into various types of high-strength adhesives.

And one very nice bonus: this substance can be recycled.

Application industries

The main areas of use for thermoplastic polyurethane are:

  • Automotive industry;
  • production of consumer goods;
  • footwear industry;
  • production of sporting goods;
  • cable production.

In the automobile and mechanical engineering industry, this substance is used for the production of handles, shock-absorbing chassis mounts, mats, springs, visors, various toggle switches and switches, insulators. In some cases, decorative parts of the car interior are made from it.

In the areas of public consumption, soles, insoles and other similar components of shoes, tips for umbrellas and so on are made from it.

Polyurethane in the footwear industry

Polyurethane found its main use in everyday life in the shoe industry. Due to its basic qualities (frost resistance, elasticity, strength, durability and resistance to constant mechanical stress), it makes excellent soles, especially for winter views shoes. The ergonomics of this polymer is high along with antiseptic properties, which allows it to be used for the manufacture of insoles.

The production of goods for recreation and sports also cannot do without polyurethane. It is used to make wheels for roller skates, sports tires, bushings and gaskets, tips for skis, special sports boots for snowboarding and speed skating, wheels for skateboards, connecting elements and various fasteners.

Brief summary

Now that we know what kind of material it is - polyurethane, it's worth summing up. So, this elastomer is one of the most commonly used compounds. It is distinguished by a number of excellent technological, physical, chemical and structural characteristics, which ensure its use in a variety of industries and industries.

All these characteristics make the material cost-effective for mass production. At the same time, the costs of this process are quite modest both financially and in terms of time costs.

As a lining material, polyurethane is used for winding power cables and decorative elements of car interiors, for roller skates and insoles. The ability to set the necessary characteristics at the manufacturing stage allows you to expand the scope of this polymer and makes them almost limitless.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane unique properties of a synthetic polymer, produced from petroleum products. Different ratios of components (the content of catalysts, blowing agents and stabilizers) regulate properties, the range is the widest: from liquids, viscous compounds to elastic rubbers and the strongest plastics. Containing polyurethane fabric It is made with use of threads - elastomers. With special strength, high tensile strength, elasticity, and excellent dielectric characteristics, highly tensile polyurethane fibers are most in demand in the textile industry.

The use of this kind of thread in interior textiles seems absurd only at first glance. In fact, with the help of an inconspicuous highly stretchable elastomer thread, a spectacular one can be sewn (a drawstring is sewn from the inside along the intended contour, an elastic thread or braid threaded into it forms a drapery pattern after tightening). The same technique can be used in decorating a successful design can be seen in the gallery of ready-made kits. Austrian curtains, with spectacular draperies of wide scallops, are made according to the same type; instead of elastic braid, a system of cords is used from the inside of the model. Furniture covers or are sewn using more dense and dimensionally stable fittings designed for high-density massive fabrics.

Polyurethane

The range of polyurethane threads is numerous, determined by the purpose. Some types are produced intertwined with a thread of a different composition (,), some are used as auxiliary ones. Textiles developed on the basis of elastic fibers (knitwear and fabrics with different properties) are indispensable in the production of immobilizing dressings, sportswear tight-fitting silhouette, swimwear. Elastomeric polyurethane fibers ("spandex", "", "neolan", "vayrin", "elastane") are known to admirers of tight-fitting clothing. Polyurethane elastomers are resistant to microorganisms and mold, do not change their properties in wet conditions.

The use in various fields of industry as a structural material intended for work under conditions of intense mechanical loads (steel bending or cold rolling shafts) is due to the strength, vibration resistance and hardness of cast polyurethanes of the NITs PU - 5 type. The most durable elastic ones are used in the production of drive belts, tires , conveyor belts, various sealants. An example containing polyurethane fabric maybe high-tech artificial leather (used for accessories for curtains, sewing covers, furniture upholstery). Effective adhesives, varnishes, polyurethane foam, heat-insulating fillers contain polyurethane of a different chemical structure.

Thanks to the development of modern science, polymers, which are fundamentally distinguished by high consumer characteristics and unique properties, have become available. Today they are used in almost all areas of construction and human activity. The most common and widely used materials are polyurethanes, polyethylenes, and polystyrenes.

largest functionality has the first version of polymerized materials, which is also called " substance with unlimited possibilities". Depending on the area of application, it can be very soft and elastic, or as strong and hard as possible. The uniqueness of the polymer lies in the fact that even at the stage of synthesis, knowing the correct proportions of additional components and additives, one can obtain a material with the desired properties.

AT recent times A new material has gained wide popularity - elastic polyurethane, which has all the useful properties of rubbers and rubbers, and due to its unique composition, surpasses all known elastomers.

History of occurrence

Elastic polyurethane - what is it? This is a special synthesized material obtained from artificial rubbers, which has elastic properties and high strength. They were first synthesized in 1937, and full-fledged production began only 20 years later.

An elastic polyurethane thread, which was synthesized and put into production in 1958 in the USA, has become widespread. The demand for the new material was so huge that within a few years it began to be produced by the world's largest countries - America, Japan, the USSR.

Elastic polymers in the form of filaments or fibers have many names depending on the manufacturer, composition and technical characteristics. "Lycra", "Elastane", "Spandex", "Linel", "Dorlastan" - all these are quite well-known names of elastic polyurethanes.

Elastic fibers from polyurethane can be obtained in four main ways:

  • by extrusion from a molten liquid polymer;
  • shaping with chemical active substances(reagents);
  • dry molding;
  • wet molding from solution.

Depending on the production method, the basic and parameters of elastic polyurethane fibers may differ slightly.

Main technical characteristics and properties

Regardless of the production method, all flexible polyurethanes have the following basic technological properties:

  • high coefficient of mechanical strength;
  • water resistance;
  • elasticity and flexibility;
  • environmental cleanliness and safety;
  • practically not subject to shrinkage during operation.

In addition, the material quickly restores its primary shape after removing additional load from it and has high tensile strength (especially polyurethane threads and fibers).

These qualities are highly valued in various fields of production, which allowed flexible polyurethanes to become indispensable materials in many industries and human activities.

Liquid two-component polymer

Recently, liquid elastic polyurethane has become widely used - a separate type of polyurethane elastomers, from which molds and dies are obtained.

Polyurethane differs from other materials used in the manufacture of artistic decorative elements by its increased strength and resistance to temperatures. With proper preparation of the mixture and compliance with all proportions, the finished material can easily withstand temperatures up to 70-100 degrees without losing its basic qualities.
For the field of semi-industrial casting, the quality of the primary matrix and injection molds plays a special role. Derived from two-component polyurethane, the molds have a number of useful properties.

First of all, it is wear resistance. This indicator is very important in small-scale production, as it allows you to cast a certain number of sculptures, decorative or artistic elements, using only one mold.

The second quality indicator is tensile strength combined with high flexibility. The third key property of the material is the absence of shrinkage. Thanks to this quality, a large number of products can be obtained from polyurethane molds, which will be identical to the original sample (matrix).

These and other properties made it possible to produce various decorative finishing materials using injection molds, primarily, which is obtained from gypsum or cement with the addition of a special coloring pigment.

Particular attention should be paid to storage conditions for two-component liquid polyurethane. Containers with the substance must be tightly closed (ideally sealed), as the substance is subject to strong oxidation under the influence of oxygen. If stored incorrectly, the material will begin to foam spontaneously and its further use will no longer be possible.

You should also not experiment on your own with the proportions of the base substance and the catalyst (hardener). Regardless of the brand of polyurethane, all manufacturers give clear recommendations regarding the weight of all interacting components. By violating the proportion, you can get the final material with absolutely different properties than you would like.

Results

Elastic polyurethanes are widely used in various industries and in many areas of the national economy due to their qualities and characteristics.

Liquid two-component polyurethane is one of the few materials that has been successfully used in the mass flow production of materials for decorative finishes rooms made of plaster, cement or concrete.

Elastic fibers combined with other types of materials to obtain strong and wear-resistant threads that are used both for sewing sportswear and for high-strength polymer fabrics used in the military industry, and even for the production of special airless tires.
