Let's go back a couple of years ago, at the time of the first Xperia Z. We fell in love with them for their design: they were strict, stately "bricks", on the sharp edges of which you could cut your hand. And it was really good - the smartphones from the Japanese company turned out to be very, let's not be afraid of this terrible word, stylish. Not even that: they were original. With an increase in the serial number, Sony's handsets became more and more sleek and ordinary. Although, of course, Sony could still be distinguished from any other devices.

“Probably rectangular bricks like Sony's original Xperia Z have completely disappeared in the River of Time,” that's what we thought when we tested the Z3+. It is not clear whether the head office of the company reads our reviews, or they themselves came up with the same ideas; the fact is that Sony has corrected it - the Z5 looks great.

We can safely welcome straight side faces, matte surfaces, sharp corners with a small radius of curvature and strict straight lines. We missed them. The gadget gained both weight and thickness compared to its predecessor: 154 versus 144 g and 7.3 versus 6.9 mm. In general, Xperia is again “bricked”, and, in our opinion, this is very correct. At the same time, it is quite convenient to work with the device with one hand: its dimensions are the same as those of the previous Xperia, the hand does not get tired of it even during long communication, and the edges do not dig into the palm. All in all, the Z5 is a pleasure to deal with.

There are no hardware keys on the front panel of the device - the navigation keys of the system are "virtual", and an external speaker is placed on the space under the screen. At the top of the panel is the lens of the front, five-megapixel camera and a cut-out earpiece. The front side of the Z5 is covered with a protective glass with a grease-repellent coating that is resistant to damage and the collection of "fingers". Its manufacturer in Sony, as usual, does not specify.

The location of the controls remains the same - the power, volume control and camera/shutter activation keys are located on the right side. The shape of the lock button has changed, and in a sense this is a significant event - the round protruding power key has not been changed since the first Xperia Z. In the Z5, it is oblong and, moreover, somewhat recessed into the case. Such changes are associated with the fact that a capacitive fingerprint scanner was built into it.

As you probably already understood, in terms of exterior, the Xperia Z5 is very reminiscent of the first Zets. However, he also got something from the new Sony smartphones. For example, polycarbonate inserts on the corners of the case - in theory, they soften the blow when the device falls.

Sony Xperia Z5, like many other gadgets of the company, is protected from dust and moisture - the device can be immersed in fresh water to a depth of one and a half meters, degree of protection IP65/68. True, you should first make sure that the cover for the Nano-SIM and microSD card slot on the left side is firmly pressed against the case. The Micro-USB connector does not have a plug - the connector is waterproof, Sony calls it Cap-less. The frame and ends of the device are made of aluminum. The Z5 is assembled well - there is no lack of rigidity in the design during operation. Nevertheless, if you press on the sides of the device, characteristic color streaks will appear on the screen - the display is not very well protected, so you should handle the device carefully, despite all sorts of "protective corners". Last year in Berlin at IFA, Sony Mobile Communications presented three models of the upper price range at the same time: the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, the world's first smartphone with a 4K display, was added to the already familiar Sony Xperia Z5 and Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. In this review, we will get acquainted with the dual-sim version of the classic flagship - SonyXperiaZ5 Dual. Using his example, let's try to figure out what the new Japanese manufacturer can offer and how interesting its product is against the background of direct competitors. To begin with, let's take a closer look at the technical characteristics of the novelty:

Appearance, arrangement of elements

With the release of the fifth generation of Zetok, Sony has changed the design concept from OmniBalance to Sense Of Unity. Despite this, we have before us an elegant non-separable glass and metal bar, which is well known since the days of the Sony Xperia Z1. But there are changes, and they lie in the details. So, the Sony Xperia Z5 Dual has got a little more strict and straight outlines of the side faces, and thanks to a special treatment, the rear panel glass has become matte, which added practicality to the device. In addition, the smartphone has lost magnetic contacts for connecting the docking station, and the proprietary round power button has received an oblong shape and a built-in fingerprint sensor.

The dimensions and weight of the Sony Xperia Z5 Dual have not changed much, which allows you to manage it even with one hand. But we have some comments on the controls.

If in previous models the round protruding power button was easy to find by touch, then the new one has practically no tactile highlight (slightly recessed) and is characterized by a sluggish short stroke. And the fingerprint scanner built into it does not work as well as we would like.

In particular, there are problems with fingerprint detection, even if most of the available slots are occupied by the same finger. Recognition occurs only when the finger is applied exactly at the angle at which it was scanned. With the right location, everything works quickly, otherwise you can use the PIN.

The position of the volume rocker also looks disputable - closer to the two-position camera button. According to the manufacturer, this is done for the convenience of zooming during shooting, but in practice you should have a fairly long index finger to reach her. During a call, the volume can be adjusted to medium or ring finger(holding in the left hand) or thumb (holding in the right hand), but this increases the likelihood of dropping the smartphone.

The front side of the Sony Xperia Z5 Dual is covered with protective glass. The frames around the screen are not the smallest: 16.25 mm on top, 15.5 mm on the bottom and 3.75 mm on the sides. The smartphone display leaves a positive impression. The screen is characterized by maximum viewing angles, a high level of contrast, bright and saturated colors, however, there is a noticeable deviation towards cold shades.

As before, there is the ability to adjust the white balance and primary color channels (RGB), as well as select ready-made image enhancement profiles.

The brightness adjustment range is sufficient for comfortable work on a sunny day or in complete darkness. Automation works quite adequately - without jerks and hitches. Multi-touch technology correctly handles up to 10 simultaneous touches. There is even a mode of operation with gloves. You can unlock your smartphone by double tapping on the screen. And when working with the camera, the sensor can be blocked.

Audio subsystem

As already mentioned, the Sony Xperia Z5 Dual smartphone is equipped with two multimedia speakers. They are located symmetrically on the front side (bottom and top). The speakers provide high-quality and at the same time loud sound: a wide frequency range is reproduced and even the presence of low frequencies is felt. At maximum volume, they do not wheeze, but high frequencies begin to predominate and the body resonates a little. In general, their capabilities are quite enough for games, watching videos, calls and notifications.

The package of the tested model does not include a headset, so the sound in the headphones was tested using gaming headphones (impedance 60 ohms) and in-ear Vivanco HS 200 WT (impedance 16 ohms). Traditionally for Sony flagships, the sound is very good, and the volume level is sufficient (there is a minimum headroom).

With minor manual adjustments, including when changing the equalizer, the sound becomes quite chic. For example, the ClearAudio+ feature adds clarity to the sound by boosting the highs but slightly dampening the mids.

Additionally, there is a radio module for recording and listening to FM radio stations with connected headphones.

Camera

The main camera received a proprietary Sony Exmor RS module (1 / 2.3 ") with a resolution of 23 megapixels and a high-aperture lens of the Sony G Lens series with f / 2.0 aperture. The focal length in 35 mm equivalent is 24 mm, which gives a fairly large viewing angle. Additionally, there is a hybrid focus system, digital image stabilization (SteadyShot) and LED flash. In sufficient light, the camera focuses at lightning speed, but speed and accuracy decrease as ambient light decreases. The resulting frames are characterized by pleasant color reproduction, high detail and good sharpness, which suffers somewhat at the edges of the frame. In most cases, the quality of photo and video content is almost as good as direct competitors, but loses when shooting in artificial or low light conditions. When shooting 4K video, support for the H.265 codec appeared, that is, the quality remains the same, but the file takes less space. The minimum focusing distance for macro photography is 8 cm.

The front camera has a 5-megapixel module, a lens with an aperture of f / 2.4 and a wide viewing angle. It copes with its direct duties quite well - the pictures are bright and detailed enough.

The main camera settings menu has changed markedly compared to what we saw in . It has become visually more pleasing and simpler, works faster, and finally learned how to remember the photo resolution set by the user during a quick launch through a hardware button on the sidewall. As before, many modes and effects are available, as well as a choice of manual or automatic shooting modes. True, in manual mode, photo resolution is limited to 8 megapixels, and only ISO, white balance and focus type can be changed from the settings.

In general, the OS not only looks good, but provides high functionality and just works great (without any hitches and slowdowns).

Performance and connectivity

Sony Xperia Z5 Dual received at its disposal the top-end 64-bit SoC processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994). It is based on the 20nm process technology and includes four high-performance ARM Cortex-A57 cores with a frequency of up to 2 GHz and four energy-efficient ARM Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz. Responsible for graphics Qualcomm Adreno 430 with support for OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.2, Vulkan 1.0 and DirectX 11.2. However, almost any load, even not so long and high, begins to slowly reveal the back of the smartphone in the camera area. A high load, and this is primarily games and shooting video in 4K Ultra HD format, warms up the smartphone case to an uncomfortable state in 5-10 minutes. The temperature of the processor itself at the same time exceeds 60 ° C.

The built-in video player has just excellent support for modern audio and video formats, as evidenced by the results of the Antutu Video Tester benchmark.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Dual model supports modern 2G GSM, 3G HSPA+ and 4G LTE Cat.6 mobile networks. Support for two SIM-cards is implemented on the basis of one radio module. Offline work

Non-replaceable capacity lithium ion battery is 2900 mAh. With a moderate load with 50% display brightness (calls, SMS, music, a little Internet), it will last for a day and a half battery life. Using the STAMINA power saving modes, this figure can be increased up to 3 days.

This year, Sony Mobile Communications presented a new line of smartphones at MWC - , which replaced the Sony Xperia Z. It's nice that the smartphone is devoid of critical flaws, but we still have some comments. These include not the most successful implementation of the fingerprint scanner, the controversial location of the volume rocker and a considerable price. Otherwise, if you are a follower of Sony Style and want to have a beautiful, solid and powerful smartphone, then Sony Xperia Z5 Dual will be an excellent choice.

While watching an HD video at the maximum level of brightness and volume, the smartphone lost 18% of its charge per hour of use. This means that the battery will last only 5.5 hours. If you run heavy games, then in half an hour the device loses 20%, which means it will work no more than 3 hours. In general, the battery will last for a day of moderate use, but it will have to be charged every evening.

In principle, Sony's new flagship smartphone does not have any very large-scale differences from previous versions (as, for example, it was the case with the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6). You can notice some nuances, but they are minimal. The front and back of the Xperia Z5 is covered with protected glass, and on the sides there is real aluminum. By the way, this very glass at the back is somehow interestingly polished, so there is no point in being afraid that the gadget will slip out of your hands.

There are no issues with assembly at all. But this was to be expected: the flagship, and even the body, as expected, is not collapsible. All slots are hidden under a cover on the left side. If you want more details, then there is a place for SIM cards and for a memory card. It is very good that the plug sits well, so it will not be able to open by accident.

The main feature of most Sony smartphones is also available in the Z5 - the phone is protected according to the IP68 standard. That is, it is not afraid of moisture and dust. The USB connector and audio output are not covered by anything. But this is already a common thing for secure smartphones. It is also worth paying tribute to the Japanese engineers who made special inserts on the smartphone that take a hit on themselves when they fall. Although it is clearly not worth abusing it. The device is still glass.

In the middle of the right side there is a lock button, which also works as a fingerprint scanner. A little lower is the volume rocker. Again, not the most convenient location for this particular button. Many people explain this arrangement by the fact that when shooting underwater, when the phone is in horizontal orientation, it is much more convenient to adjust the zoom. But, firstly, you and I adjust the sound on land much more often than we choose the video scale underwater, and secondly, if you go to the official Sony website, you can see a warning that the Z5 will survive a walk in the rain without any problems or wash under the tap, but do not completely immerse it in water! That's how things are, yes.

There is also a slightly weak move of the lock key, but this is just a matter of habit, and after a few days you don’t even notice it all. As for the fingerprint scanner built in here, it works adequately, but if your hands are wet or just damp, there will be problems.

There are also stereo speakers on the front of the Z5. They are quite loud, but due to the protection against moisture and dust, the sound is not as good as we would like. The main thing is that you will definitely hear the call. And just a few more words about color options. It's cool when a flagship device is sold not only in white or black. In the case of the Xperia Z5, there is also gold and dark green - that's how we have it in our review now. But for Sony, this is already quite normal practice.

In general, outwardly the smartphone is beautiful, and it will be quite convenient to use it. If you used another Sony smartphone, then you won’t even have to retrain. If the phone is from another company, you will need to practice for several days.

Display

The screen here is 5.2-inch with Full HD resolution. Viewing angles, of course, are at a decent level (maximum), and everything is in order with other parameters: high maximum brightness and good contrast. Matrix - IPS. When describing the Z5 display, Sony uses different pathetic words: TRILUMINOS, X-Reality Engine, Live Color and so on. In general, it is very cool that here the resolution is Full HD. After all, this is quite enough for normal operation - 424 PPI. Oleophobic coating is also available. And enough quality, so the screen does not collect fingerprints.

For the "boys who came to success" Sony also has a Z5 Premium with a 4K screen. But here choose what is more convenient for you.

Camera Features

The main camera here is 23-megapixel. The new Exmor RS3 sensor with f/2.0 aperture is used. And the first thing that catches your eye is a very fast autofocus. In official documents, we are talking about three hundredths of a second, but it is clear that in reality a lot also depends on other parameters (lighting, for example). The pictures are good: clear and with natural colors.

An acceptable result can be obtained when shooting at night, but the Galaxy S6 or G4 still produces more interesting photos in low light.

Video can be recorded up to 4K at 30 frames per second. There is also Full HD at 60 frames and Slow-Mo 720p at 120 frames. In the settings you can select manual mode, but there are not very many settings. You can also find a bunch of different jokes for selfies, several dozens of filters, panorama shooting, super automatic mode, in which all the parameters are selected for you by the software, and everything in this style. There is also a virtual reality effect, but it is rather just a toy, there is no practical use from it.

By the way, as for selfies, the front camera here is 5-megapixel, and even wide-angle. Therefore, all your friends will fit in the frame. Just to do this, you first need to start them! In general, the cameras here seem to be good, but quite ordinary. They take great photos, but there are better ones out there.

One of the most powerful solutions of last year, the Snapdragon 810 chip, is used here as a processor. Does it heat up? Well, let's say not as much as many might expect. At normal work everything is fine. Internet, mail, messages, calls - there are no problems with this. The phone doesn't even get warmer. But if you stick to some demanding toys for several hours in a row, then his temperature can rise to 45 degrees.

The Adreno 430 accelerator is responsible for the graphics here. Paired with 3 GB of RAM, the smartphone easily copes with all powerful tasks. All games run at maximum settings: Asphalt 8, Dead Trigger 2 and so on. In WoT, of course, you will have to reduce your graphic requirements a little, but this is quite normal. For example, in Epic Citadel Xperia Z5 produces approximately 55-56 frames per second, and in AnTuTu it gains a different number of “parrots” each time, but on average 65-70 thousand parrots.

As for performance, everything is fine with it. The system is not only fast, but also stable. This, of course, cannot but rejoice.

In Z5, outwardly, it has not changed much when compared with previous devices: icons have been redrawn in some places and a couple of useless elements from the menu have been cut out. Given the presence of 3 GB of RAM, it all works quite quickly and without brakes. They also removed various slag, leaving only the most necessary applications and their proprietary services.

On the whole, in terms of software the smartphone is almost completely suitable for use on the principle of "Turn on and work."

The battery here is set to 2900 mAh. Initially, it may seem that this will not be enough for normal and long work. But in practice, everything is different. Sony Xperia Z5 lives for a day with a fairly active mode of use: music, mail, video, social networks, Internet, calls and even an hour and a half you can still play. In addition to all this, of course, it is worth adding a power saving mode, which can easily increase these figures.

The only thing is that when shooting video in 4K, the phone bursts just before our eyes. It takes just over an hour to fully charge the battery, given the presence of Quick Charge 2.0 technology.

Eventually

Of course, there are things in the smartphone that you will have to get used to (for example, the placement of the control keys). But these are all trifles ... The Xperia Z5 has a high-quality display, good assembly, powerful hardware and just excellent autonomy. Plus two more sims! True, the whole thing costs 720 dollars. And here it is already necessary to proceed from whether we are ready to spend such an amount now. The camera in a smartphone may not be as great as we would like, but it is still one of the best on the market. And you can't argue with that. In general, the Sony Xperia Z5 is a cool device that you can want!
