Preliminary remarks
1. In German, spelling is quite simple, so often words are read the way they are written. However, I would like to give some rules for reading German words:
a) For the correct pronunciation of the sound "o", round your lips, as when pronouncing the sound "o" (tongue lies flat), and try to pronounce the sound "e" vigorously without changing the position of the lips.
b) For the correct pronunciation of the sound "u", round your lips, as when pronouncing the sound "u" (the tongue lies flat), and try to pronounce the sound "and" without changing the position of the lips.
c) The letter "a" conveys a sound similar to the Russian sound "e" in the word "it".
d) The letter “s” is read as the sound “s” at the end of the catch and before consonants (as, for example, in the word “Moskau” (moskau) - “Moscow”), as the sound “z” before and between vowels (as in the word "Saft" (zaft) - "juice") and as the sound "sh" at the beginning of a word or root before the letters t and p (as in the word "Stunde" (shtunde) - "hour").
e) The combination of letters “ch” is read as “хх” after i, e, a, e, u (as, for example, in the word “ich” (ih) - the pronoun “I”); as "x" after a, o, u (as, for example, in the word "Woche" (wohe) - "week") or as "k" before s (as in the word "sechs" (zeks) - "six") .
f) The combination of the letters "ei" conveys the sound "ai" (as in the word "nein" (nein) - "no").
g) The combination of the letters "sch" conveys the sound "sh" (as in the word "Schweiz" (Schweitz) - "Switzerland").
h) The combination of the letters “tsch” conveys the sound “h” (as in the word “Deutschland” (Deutschland) - “Germany”).
i) The consonants "b", "d" and "g" at the end of words are stunned.
2. In the transcription below, the stressed vowel is in bold. AT compound words there are two strokes.
3. German nouns are always capitalized.
4. Although there are many dialects of the German language, official language, Hochdeutsch, understood everywhere. Learn at least a few basic phrases, this is especially useful to you if you travel to small cities where they do not always understand English language, especially in the eastern part of the united Germany.
