How to live in Singapore. Utilities and transport in Singapore

The city-state-island of Singapore has become home to about 4.5 million people. Of these, there are very few Russians - about 2 thousand, which, however, does not reduce our interest in this place. The life of Russians in Singapore is another page in the history of this city, which is famous for its cosmopolitanism, stability and speed of development. What and how is it arranged here? Let's see.

Coming here, be prepared to speak English on an industrial scale. Despite the fact that, in addition to English, Chinese, Tamil and Malay are considered official languages, most of the real communication takes place in the language of the subjects of Queen Elizabeth II. True, as practice shows, many of our fellow citizens, especially from the younger generation, still have a good command of the language - it is enough to communicate. If by profession you need to communicate a lot, then you have to pull it up. But fortunately, it is not difficult to find practice in this city.

You can find a job in the city - this is also a question that many people ask when they are interested in the life of Russians in. Another thing is that it may take more time than we would like. The recommended search period on the spot is up to 3 months, while an excellent solution would be to try to get a job in advance. For example, through bulletin boards or dating, or on business trips - a lot of visiting employees work here in temporary work. If you came here during a business trip and want to stay, you can start looking for suitable vacancies in your free time.

Singapore also makes a serious offer for businessmen who even have their own company. Here are excellent conditions for the international market, many free niches, strong legislation. If you decide to create an enterprise that will bring tangible benefits, then you can safely count on obtaining a local residence permit (although here, as elsewhere, there are some nuances). Many Russians start working here on a work visa, and only then receive this or that resident status.

In general, there are opportunities for everyone here: whether you are at least an employee, a scientist, a traveler or an entrepreneur. A city that has declared development, progress and improvement as its priority, and has been following this choice for many years, shows how even on a deserted rocky cliff, a kind of paradise can be built.

Yes, there is high competition here, yes, there are problems here. But on the other hand, you can safely walk at night, because the crime rate is very low. You can enjoy cleanliness and order - fines for a thrown cigarette or can can be $160. Many things that are familiar to Russians are unacceptable here. It takes getting used to, but over time it makes staying here very comfortable.

A serious issue for every newcomer is the topic of housing and accommodation. Let's be honest, Singapore is not the cheapest country in the world, and even more so in Asia. If in almost the entire region you can comfortably live on a penny, then this is not the case with Singapore.

Prices for rental housing here start at an average of $1,500, and really comfortable housing in residential areas will cost about $2,500. In this amount, you will receive not only an apartment with two bedrooms, but also a swimming pool, a barbecue area and similar bonuses on the territory of the residential complex. Guards, passes and similar security systems may or may not be valuable, depending on the location.

Of course, the closer to the center, the higher the prices. Therefore, all visitors need to decide what is more important at the same prices: to get 20-25 minutes to work and live in slightly more comfortable conditions, or 5-10 minutes and live more cramped. For those who have experienced Moscow traffic jams, the answer is obvious.

By the way, about getting to work. There is a very developed public transport system, while personal transport is very expensive - a car can cost 4 times more than in Russia (where, anyway, the same imported cars are somewhat more expensive than in Europe). Thanks to this policy, there are relatively few cars here, but the roads are good, transport runs on schedule, and the air is cleaner.

Feeding in Singapore also costs money, although this issue largely depends on your food habits, as well as where you buy food. The markets are cheaper than in stores, although many do not complain about the prices in supermarkets. Here it is better to check for yourself, having gone at least on a tour and comparing prices.

If you smoke, then get ready for problems - the prices for cigarettes here are as high as in the same, if not higher, while you cannot bring your own. So after, frankly speaking, cheap Russian cigarettes, it will be difficult to get used to.

If you have children or plan to have them in the future, Singapore is a great place to raise and educate them. As mentioned above, it is safe here, while a strong education is given in schools and universities. Languages, as you understand, here you can also learn a variety of languages, moreover, just by going out into the street. Finding teachers is not such a problem. By the way, many Russians in Singapore are just engaged in teaching activities - where without it.

What many people who have moved to live in Singapore note is confidence and comfort. Yes, the prices are higher here, but at the same time, the salaries are good. If there are any problems, you can always come and discuss them with your superiors and colleagues. Many relationships are built on mutual assistance and respect - everyone here is new, just someone arrived earlier or later. A single pseudo-nation has not yet formed here, as, for example, in the United States. Everyone who is ready to work and offer high-quality services and goods is welcome here.

Singapore has summer all year round, the streets are in perfect order, the park is full of electric trees, and crime is so rare that even ordinary incidents can cause a sensation. As part of a series of articles about Russians who went to live abroad, I talked to Anna from Penza, who moved to Singapore and found a job in a technology startup.

I was born in Penza, and at the age of 16 I entered the Russian University of Economics. Plekhanov in Moscow. The school had a very good language base, so I started working with foreign students almost immediately at the university. In the fourth year I went to study on an exchange in Holland - this was my first trip abroad.

After a semester in the Netherlands, the idea of living and working abroad did not leave me. I had already seen enough of Europe, America did not seem interesting, so the choice fell on Asia. At first I was going to China, but after a couple of remote interviews, I realized that without a language it is difficult to get a good position there.

I was looking for a job with my future husband. After one of the interviews with a Chinese company, he was recommended to the Singapore office. At that time, we knew almost nothing about Singapore, but we read Wikipedia and realized that this is exactly what we needed. There is eternal summer, very high level life, almost no crime and corruption.

200 people per place

Two years ago, my husband left for Singapore on a work visa, and I started looking for work from Moscow. I sent my resume to hundreds of companies - to no avail. Then I decided to go to Singapore and continue searching on the spot.

Finding a job is a different story. The Singapore labor market is quite saturated, in addition, there are strict quotas for hiring foreigners. For six months, my resumes went nowhere, there were not even answers from HR. Although in Russia I constantly received interesting offers.

The very first interview with a recruiting company put everything in its place. I was told that for every job there are 100-200 resumes, of which about 30 are from Singaporeans with relevant experience. Standard job search methods do not work here.

Sleep at work

As a result, I got a job in a fast-growing technology startup. Now such startups are especially in trend in Singapore. They are gladly supported by the state, not only in words, but also in deeds: for example, it is much easier for them to get a government contract or benefits.

I work in the business development department. I have a small team: two Singaporeans and a Frenchman. We look for and lead large clients, promote the company, participate in exhibitions and conduct training. Colleagues jokingly call me russian mafia lady. I think they are proud that we have such a diverse team.

My workplace very different from the Russian office. Next to the tables is a small bed where you can take a nap. I usually sleep in the afternoon. Not more than half an hour, but then you feel like a different person. And once a month, to maintain morale, employees go to a mini-corporate party on the beach or karaoke.

Such orders are a feature of startups. In many traditional companies, it is customary to work exactly by the hour, no more and no less than it should be. Apparently, due to the fact that the average vacation in Singapore is only eleven days a year.

Vodka, Putin, cold

Singaporeans are very open and curious people. Because of the European appearance, I am constantly asked where I am from. For most, I am the first person they know from Russia. There are many expats in the country, but usually they are Australians, French, British. There are very few Russians.

Vodka, Putin, cold - this is how the locals represent Russia. Of course, they ask a lot of questions - mostly about Russian food and customs. By the way, Putin is loved and respected here. Singaporeans say that this is how a true leader should be.

The weather was very difficult at first. It is plus 28 here all year round, and it is almost impossible to be outside during the day: it is very hot and humid. But in the morning and in the evening it's just perfect. At the same time, in offices, air conditioners work at full capacity, so you have to walk in jackets and sweaters.

Many people ask about snow and winter, but I don't miss the cold. There is no longer enough seasonality, even a slight change in the weather.

Singlish lessons

Singapore is a country of immigrants. Most of all there are Chinese, a little less Malays and Indians. Although the country is only 52 years old, everyone here considers themselves Singaporeans, and it is not customary to ask about ethnicity.

Tolerance among the locals is absolute. Buddhist and Hindu temples can be adjacent to the mosque on the same street. Most of my colleagues with Chinese roots, oddly enough, turned out to be Catholics and go to church every Sunday.

Singapore has four state languages: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil (Indian), but I have not yet met a single person who does not know English. The only caveat: English is very specific here.

Singlish (singaporean english) includes words from other languages. He doesn't follow some rules English grammar, the pronunciation is also peculiar: with a strong Chinese accent.

The first month I got used to Singlish and could not even order food properly. I had to ask several times and ask to write what was said on paper.

singapore order

They say about Singapore in Asia that it is a Disneyland for adults: everything is perfectly clean, people are very polite, there is practically no crime. It really is. One day, an article about an incident hung on the front page of a local news site for an entire day: two men argued and one pushed the other. It was filmed and discussed as if it had been the crime of the century.

I lost my iPhone and wallet a couple of times - everything was returned. When I forgot an expensive ring in a locker at the fitness club, the cleaning lady gave it back the very next day. Here, even places in the food courts are occupied, leaving the phone or wallet on the table unattended.

Almost the entire city is covered by cameras, and you will not see the police on the street, but if something unexpected happens, they arrive a few minutes after the incident. In Singapore, high fines for garbage, for discarded chewing gum, for a meal on the subway, but at the same time, everything has been done to make it inconvenient to break the rules: there are garbage cans on the street every 20 meters, and they simply don’t sell chewing gum.

Once I saw a young man jump over the turnstiles in the subway. Against the backdrop of general order, he looked like a reckless subverter of morality and laws.

The last cow

One of the big disadvantages of Singapore is the prices. The city is one of the five most expensive in the world. The territory of the island is limited, so nothing is grown or produced here. One local told us that the only cow in the country died last year.

Due to the tightness, real estate is very expensive here. Renting a one-room apartment far from the city center costs at least 100,000 rubles a month. Huge taxes on cars have been introduced, so it is also very difficult to buy a car: a simple Volkswagen Polo costs five million rubles.

Food prices are two to three times higher than in Russia. For an appointment with a therapist, you will have to pay 1600 rubles, for a specialist doctor - from five thousand rubles. A trip by metro costs an average of 75 rubles, alcohol - at least 600 rubles for a glass of the simplest wine.

But street food is cheap. Singaporeans even joke that eating well is a local sport. In food courts, they cook well, and one serving costs from a hundred rubles. Racks everywhere with delicious Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and Japanese food. There is also the concept of "Western food". Common names for creepy-looking pasta and beans, scrambled eggs, french fries, and overcooked meats.

Singapore tourist visas are now issued for a month. Truth, unmarried girls up to 30 years, it is increasingly difficult to get even such a visa. With work visas to Singapore is now much more difficult than it was before 2014. Hard quotas for hiring foreigners have been introduced, and there is also a minimum wage. For a regular permit, the salary must be at least 140 thousand rubles. For highly qualified personnel - 220 thousand rubles. Then you can apply for a visa for next of kin.

Russian mutual assistance

Singapore has a small but very friendly Russian-speaking community. Due to the difficulties in obtaining a long-term visa, there are almost no random people here. Everyone has a good education, and usually have experience living abroad.

The Russian-speaking women's Facebook group discusses everything from places to get shoes fixed to dental treatments. Everyone helps each other. I don't think I've ever met anyone like this before.

We recently went to Russia for two weeks. The first thing that catches your eye - bad roads and beautiful people. We do not have any long-term plans for the future. Singapore is good, but everywhere has its pros and cons. It is unlikely that we will stay here for the rest of our lives. It is possible that we will move to Europe or America, or even back to Russia.

Many countries wanted to repeat the Singapore miracle, but only a few succeeded. In the past, a backward state in some 50-60 years has turned into an Asian tiger, the most advanced, technological and modern country in the world. If you want to see the future, then you should definitely visit this country: futuristic architecture, clean streets, low crime rate (virtually non-existent), strict laws, maximum safety on the streets, many entertainments and amusement parks. The above advantages make this state one of the most promising and comfortable places to live. In this publication, we will take a detailed look at the cost of living and prices in Singapore in 2018 for food, cafe food, transport, property rentals and utility bills. Recently, experts have compiled the TOP-5 most expensive countries for tourism and life. Guess which country won first place?

Cost of living in Singapore in 2018

Car taxes are the highest in the world. Even the average Singaporean, who earns an average salary, cannot afford to buy his own car because of the very high tax. The authorities thus artificially underestimate the growth in the number of cars on the roads in order to effective fight with stoppers. The streets are mostly driven by cars of the most expensive and prestigious brands in the world. The cream of society has its own car, among which are the directors of large companies, millionaires, entrepreneurs, etc.

Apartment rentals and utility bills in Singapore

The main expenses of local residents are spent on renting apartments and utility bills. The city is recognized as one of the most expensive places to live due to high rental rates. We analyzed the average cost of renting apartments (from 1 bedroom to 3 bedrooms) in the city center and residential areas. Multi-storey residential buildings can be called a separate mini-city.
